Make checking your credit report an annual tradition; doing so not only gives you an opportunity to correct and confirm your credit history, but it also helps you spot suspicious activity and identity theft. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, consumers can get a free credit report once a year.
The three national credit reporting agencies are TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. The easiest way to get a credit report from each is to visit annualcreditreport.com. Note that this is the only federally-approved website for free credit reports. There are many sites that are advertised as free and offer similar services, but they often require memberships, free trials, credit card info etc.
If you decide not to check your credit report every year, it’s a good idea to at least check it when you consider taking out a loan. Doing so before you apply for a loan can give you time to correct any errors on your report which can potentially improve the offers lenders give you.
